Opinion:
I have owned a number of P and S digicams in the past, including 3 very nice ones ( olympus SD350-- Canonm A710is--and Panasonic DMC TZ-3) and a passle of poor performers by Kodak, HP, and others...I have graduated to the ultimate FINAL choice for me ,because I feel comfortable with it and it has all I can ask for in a P and S digicam.. The technology advancements in digicams proceed at a rapid pace..Improvements, upon improvements are the hallmarks of Digicam manufacturers. Each trying to outbest the other..Ultimately , the researching consumer for digicams has to"DRAW A LINE IN THE SAND" and STOP at a entity that makes sense for his or her photographic wants, and needs.. I have gone full circle w/ P and S digicams, being unstatisfied, un saciated and unforfilled w/ choice after choice of digicams,as you can see in my opening sentences.. NOW, I have settled in , FINALLY, with the Canon G-9. A lirttle brick of a digicam ( reminesent of the old Range finder block style film plane cameras) The design of the G-9 could be considered RETRO in some quarters. Aside from this, it adavanced in technologic expertise, beyond the needs and expectations of a tyrol ( would be., wanna be photog) such as myself. Expert and professional photographers might have a more critical EYE and not be 100% satisfied w/ a P and S digicam, even one as advanced as the G-9. Subjectively , as a amature , I can say, the G-9 meets any and all the requirements i would like in a digicam-- here are just a few of the BIGGIES ,I find amazing in the G-9 ..
1. Am able to shoot in 3200 ASA mode and get decent snaps
2.am able to shoot in the extended digital zoom tele mode as much as 24x total magnification and get decent snaps.
3. am able to shot in the MACRO mode from 189 inches down to less than a inch and get decent snaps.
4. am able to shot w/ a auxiliary flash in place and double the flash range.about 30 feet before any light drop off.
5. am able to shoot using a filter ,with auxiliary adapter tube in place. The polarizing lens cuts haze and increases sparkle in water snaps
6.am able to shoot FAST by either switching to a number of choices : The SPORTS scene mode, or MANUAL FOCUS, or Holding the Shutter button 1/2 way down before clicking, or increasting the shutter speed in Manual modes- All work to capture moving photo ops. Thechoices afforded by the G-9 are myriad.
7. Am able to shoot Vertical snaps with ease. Holding the G=9 for a vertical snap is as easy as holding itfor a horizontal one..Many digicams do not take easily to vertical position holding..
8. am able to use the built in optical view finder ,when too much light or not enough light preclude the use of the dynamically brilliant 3 inch LCD screen
9. Am able to shoot with a wide angle auxiliary booster lens ,attached by means of the adaptor tube ,increasing the wide angle capability by 0.7x.not at all shabby for a P and S digicam.
10. FINALLY ,am able to shoot people , with the face detection technology working to brighten up countances very nicely, enhancing a sparkling quality to even the brightest smile.. Since I shoot people alot, this is a most useful feature..
In conclusion, the G-9 was what I was searching for, thruout the long procession of former digicams I owned... The pocket book bleeding has STOPPED and The fairy tale ending has engulfed me. The G-9 and myself: "lived happily everafter" hal5141
