Indonesian gaming moves forward

Despite the fact that the online gaming market in Indonesia is definitely at its early stage, recent developments indicate that it has started to leave its shell as an emerging gaming market.

IDC's latest study has identified the following trends present in the Indonesian online gaming industry, specifically in the areas of online games and service providers (SPs), which are likely to affect gamer base expansion and growing market mindshare.

According to Bisnis.com, there is only one big player in the industry now, namely PT Lyto Datarindo Fortuna or Lyto.net which earns more than 80 percent market share of the country's online gaming with 3 million active users. For the time being, the other SPs are competing to catch up with the rest of the market.

The company is enjoying market growth of around 25 percent this year, with Jakarta as its big market.

Lyto provides four gaming contents, namely Ragnarok, GetAmped R, Seal Online and RF Online. Ragnarok is the biggest, followed by Seal Online.

Other online game service providers are usually supported by media publications such as Hot Games magazine as part of giant publisher Gramedia Group and Bolehgame.com which is affiliated to Internet content provider BolehNet. Some of them are related to other content providers like Satu.net and Astaga.com.

Hot Games magazine and Lyto recently announced Game Maker Contest Indonesia
2007 (GMCI 2007). The country's game developers can submit their creations prior to August 31 if they want to join this competition.

The objective of the competition is to look for the country's most talented game developers.

IDC also pointed out that SPs have indicated growing interest in developing local games that cater to the Indonesian gaming populace given the strong nature of the Bahasa Indonesia language and the Indonesian cultural influence, notwithstanding the prevalence of imported online gaming titles in the market today.

Those developments show that the Indonesian gaming market is moving forward now at a fast pace.
