Driving in China: Some people actually do know where they're going!
Jul 16, 2007 18:16Maybe it's just that I don't have many friends in China who drive. But today when I was asking a Chinese friend about what appeared to me to be an ultra-cool GPS navigation system in his car, he replied:
"Dude... This is normal in China these days. And cheap, too."
Ok, so he didn't say "Dude", but you get my point.
Needless to say, I was impressed. Even back home in Canada I had not seen a system as cool as this (and again, maybe it's just the gang I hang out with). Here are some of the details:
- Touchscreen control
- GPS system inset in dashboard, integrated with stereo system
- Road maps are complete for all over China, with the only places not covered being some rural/countryside areas
- Drag your finger to any point on the map, and it'll immediately calculate the distance from your current location to that point
- When driving in reverse, the road map display switches to a camera view from rear. So if you happen to run over any unfortunate pedestrians, you'll have an excellent view of the action
Now again, it's not so much the GPS system that surprised me.
More impressive was the fact that this kinda thing is becoming not-so-surprising here in the new China.
