Apple MacBook Air
The good: Incredibly thin yet surprisingly sturdy; new touchpad gesture controls are very useful; remote optical drive makes living without a built-in drive much easier.
The bad: Very limited connectivity; slower than other MacBooks; SSD hard-drive option is ridiculously expensive and standard hard drive is small; battery is not replaceable.
The bottom line: The design is revolutionary, but Apple's MacBook Air will appeal to a smaller, more specialized audience than the standard MacBook, thanks to a stripped-down set of connections and features.

Sony Vaio VGN-TT17GN/X
First take
Before the advent of Netbooks, the Sony Vaio T series and Fujitsu LifeBook P lineup gave glimpse of true mobility. With a petite form factor and long battery life, the Vaio T remains the premium model for the traveling executive. Though on the surface it may seem to compete with low-cost Netbooks, the Vaio brings the Core 2 Duo platform and integrated optical drive to the game. Sony further justifies its premium price tag by encasing the T series with a carbon-fiber chassis. The latest iteration, the Vaio TT series, ups the ante by offering dual solid-state drives (SSD) as well as a Blu-ray writer drive, a feature not seen in ultraportables before.

Asus Lamborghini VX3
The good: Solid construction; leather detailing; cool branded extras.
The bad: Kind of slow for a laptop named after a race car; expensive; poor battery life.
The bottom line: The Asus Lamborghini VX3 is the laptop recast as status symbol. It looks and feels like a luxury item; we just wish it had a bit more power under the hood.
