Is the 14-inch laptop a dying breed? Judging from the notebooks launched in recent months, PC vendors appear to be launching 13-inch models for those looking for a thin-and-light machine (such as Ultrabooks). If you wish to get a larger display and better performance, your options are 15-inch laptops, such as the Dell XPS 15z, Samsung Chronos 7 and Sony Vaio SE.

Fortunately, there are still 14-inch notebooks around that fulfill both reasonably well--the Samsung RF411 packs a Core i7 processor and Nvidia graphics into a 2.3kg package.

Upside

With a quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, the Samsung RF411 certainly lives up to its billing as being "big on performance". This processor supports Intel HyperThreading technology, which means you can get up to eight virtual cores. It's a very useful feature for tasks that can be split into multiple threads to be handled by each core, such as 3D rendering.

The discrete graphics isn't too shabby either. The default configuration features Nvidia's GeForce GT 525M chip, with an option to upgrade it to a GT 540M. It also comes with a hefty 2GB of video memory. Nvidia's Optimus graphics-switching technology is supported. Depending on the application, the laptop will automatically switch between the integrated and Nvidia graphics. For instance, integrated graphics is more than sufficient for video playback. This feature helps to conserve power, leading to a longer uptime.

Samsung has equipped this laptop with a Fast Start feature that brings the PC back from sleep within seconds. A video demonstration from the company showed that it takes just a couple of seconds for you to continue your work after opening the lid.

The Samsung RF411 has a display resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels, which is typical for its segment. We would have preferred a screen with a higher resolution, but the notebook makes up for it with a brighter-than-average display rated at up to 300 nits.

Samsung is quite generous with the USB ports. There are four on this laptop, including two USB 3.0 ports. With the right peripheral, you'll be able to take advantage of the higher transfer rates using the newer interface. There are also HDMI and VGA outputs, along with an SD card slot.

Downside

The Samsung RF411 has a glossy and reflective lid that looks quite distinctive. Unfortunately, like most of this laptop, the lid is made of plastic. Compared with laptops that use more costly materials such as aluminum or magnesium alloy, the build quality of the RF411 may feel inferior. The chunky chassis doesn't help improve its physical appearance either.

Outlook

The Samsung RF411 is a versatile machine that can compete with desktop replacements in terms of performance. It also retains a measure of portability and, more importantly, it is one of the most affordable Core i7 laptops you can get at S$1,099 (US$838).
