Acer Aspire 5920G (Core 2 Duo T7300 Processor 2.0GHz, 2GB RAM)
The Aspire 5920 is a candidate for the ugliest laptop of the year. It's smeared in enough grey to put British skies to shame, and has had some absolutely awful design touches. But the rest of the laptop is a very good one. It's fast, feature-packed and is excellent value for money.
| The good | High-end specifications; excellent performance; brilliant screen. |

| The bad | Grey coloring; misplaced USB port; overall design. |

|
We're not afraid to say that Acer (or BMW Designworks) got it wrong with the Aspire 5920--it's hideous. We couldn't find a soul in our office who thought it was attractive. The glossy, slightly curved screen lid is trendy enough, but glossy screen lids are the laptop equivalent of jeans and a t-shirt--nothing special. Having said that, the car door handle-style screen-opening mechanism, which doubles as a Webcam, looks the business.
If you thought the outside was bad, you'll vomit when you see the interior. Don't let the white-looking pictures fool you--it's beiger than John Major. Sure, beige is inoffensive, but it makes this laptop look like it was crafted from leftover Amiga bits.
![]() The dummy button on the left reminds us of cars that don't have all the optional extras. | |
What's more infuriating is that the shortcut buttons on the left are mechanical, while those on the right (for controlling media playback) are touch-sensitive. We'd have preferred an all-mechanical design as it's incredibly easy to touch the buttons by accident. Doing so causes the laptop to emit an incredibly obnoxious beeping noise like a supermarket checkout. The hugely unresponsive mouse trackpad is almost as annoying.
The evidence suggests the designers know much more about designing cars than they do about designing laptops. Why else would the lone USB port on the right side sit about 1mm away from the DVD drive? Once you connect a standard-sized USB device, it physically blocks the drive bay, preventing it from opening. What's more, the logo showing the location of the USB port sits above the optical drive, and not the USB port. The word "wrong" doesn't do it justice.
Our final design gripe is with the mouse trackpad--it's too wide. Perhaps it's our bucket-like hands that cause the problem, but the ball of our right hand would often stray onto the mouse trackpad, causing the cursor to move around the screen just when you least want it to. This wouldn't be so much of a problem were there a button to temporarily disable the mouse--but there isn't.

The Aspire 5920 has plenty of substance to make up for its questionable style. It's a next-generation Centrino Duo, or Santa Rosa, laptop that uses a 2GHz Intel T5300 CPU and an ample 2GB of RAM. The memory runs at 667MHz and not the full 800MHz supported by the motherboard, but we expect Acer will switch to faster memory as it becomes more widely available.
The Aspire 5920 ships with 512MB of Intel Turbo Memory--one of the first laptops we've seen to do so. Also known as Robson Flash memory, this dedicated memory module is designed to reduce the amount of time it takes for the laptop to power up, access programs and read/write data.
It works by reducing the laptop's reliance on the hard drive, which can be a bottleneck in many cases. It didn't seem to make much of a difference for our model, though--it took 59 seconds to boot up from the moment we hit the power button.
Acer has positioned the Aspire 5920 primarily as a Media Center laptop. It has "Dolby Home Theater" and "Virtual Surround Sound" scrawled across the top of the keyboard, just above a silver panel housing the speakers. A subwoofer is mounted on the underside of the laptop to provide extra bass. It'll never replace a decent set of dedicated speakers, but the audio sounds surprisingly good. The laptop features 7.1-channel audio capability, so you can connect it to a set of external speakers.

The laptop's media capabilities are helped by a lovely 15.4-inch screen. It looks fabulous in use and is ideal for watching movies, or browsing pictures on. Our only qualms are that its reflective CrystalBrite coating renders it nearly unusable in direct sunlight, and that the hinge is quite unstable. It wobbles noticeably even sitting on a desk and even more so when being used on a train or plane.
Acer supplies a 160GB hard drive, which is on the small size for a media laptop. The Vista Ultimate edition operating system and pre-installed programs occupy about 40GB, leaving you with approximately 120GB to play with. The DVD rewriter drive lets you create backups or watch DVDs, but if you really want to push the boat out you can opt for the version with an HD DVD drive. However, this option might not be available in your region.

Acer rounds up the package by providing an ExpressCard slot, a memory card reader supporting most popular formats, Wi-Fi (including 300Mbps 802.11n support), infrared and an integrated Crystal Eye Webcam. Software includes the very useful Acer Empowering Technology (Acer eNet, ePower, ePresentation, eLock, eRecovery, eSettings Management), which you can read more about here. You also get a trial of Norton Internet Security, NTI CD-Maker and CyberLink PowerProducer.
The Aspire 5920 is a well-equipped PC that offers fantastic value for money. It's not as attractive or as well-designed as the Asus Lamborghini VX2, for example, but if you don't mind the beige it's certainly worth considering. Performance And Battery Life
The Aspire 5920 is a very quick laptop. Gamers will be interested to hear it scored 3,288 in 3DMark 2006. This trounces the 2,344 achieved by the Asus Lamborghini VX2. It was also impressive in real-world tests, propelling the graphically intensive F.E.A.R to 28 frames per second.
As expected, it had no trouble running more mundane applications. It munched its way through our PCMark 2005 test,, racking up 4,739, which is higher than the theoretically quicker Asus V1J. We suspect the Intel Turbo Memory played a role here, although the extra 1GB of system memory obviously doesn't hurt, either.
Battery life was about average for this sort of laptop. It lasted 2 hours 13 minutes in our BatteryEater test, which is exactly long enough to let you watch The Blues Brothers on DVD.

Pros: Gaming laptop, good specs
Cons: Heat issue after playing games...
Summary: Good laptop...bad heat issue
Overall this is a nice laptop. After 9 months of using it, i would say this is definitely a worth buy. Just the heat issue is around to haunt you. Better buy a notebook cooler to at least overcome this issue...
Pros: Gaming specs
Cons: Battery life
Summary: Cheap yet very awesome!
I super love this laptop! *smile* PROS: * Gaming specs (Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT, 512 MB dedicated memory, 2.2 GHz, 2 GB DDRII) * HD (High Definition) * DVD writer * 250 GB HDD etc. some features/applications: * Bluetooth * Acer e tech. * Built-in webcam * wi-fi ready etc. CONS: * just its BATTERY. it could have been perfect, you know! :D
Pros: Excellent Graphics. High end feature packed.
Cons: Lack of adequate heat dissipation. Heavy,
Summary: HIgh end performer
Amazing performer for its price. Definitely one to rival the top line of laptops from other brands. One major(and rather disappointing) problem is it heats up mighty fast. Tho it can play top of the line graphic intensive games with no problems, its lack of an effective cooling system limits playing time greatly. Be prepared to invest in some quality external cooling mechanism.
Pros: Great specs; Great value for money; Beautiful screen
Cons: Touch-sensitive buttons sometimes activated accidentally; Loud touchpad buttons
Summary: Great laptop, bad review..
What's that crap about 'smearing in enough grey to put British skies to shame'? One of the worst-written review I've read on this great site. For this laptop's great specs, it's seriously cheap. A similar notebook can easily hundreds of dollars more. A MacBook Pro with similar specs costs at least a thousand more (SGD currency). Acer has been increasing the specifications for the 5920G, without increasing its price, in light of the release of its newer Gemstone notebooks equipped with GF 9x00 series graphics cards. The 2 cons I find more disturbing are the touch-sensitive buttons and touchpad buttons. The touch-sensitive buttons might get activated when you just brush your hands over them, but it isn't really a problem since you can adjust their sensitivity. The touchpad buttons are just too hard and loud. It gives the impression of them being really cheap parts. Be prepared to spend a little extra cash on a cooling pad, since this laptop can get really, really hot if you're doing graphics-intensive stuffs, 3D-modelling/rendering, and playing recent games. Bioshock ran very fine on highest settings until the temperature shot till 80+ degrees celcius about half an hour into the game, when the game lagged horribly, becoming unplayable. But hey, as compared to your precious laptop, a cooling pad is a worthwhile investment, and they can come as low as SGD$10. Or just get two rubber doorstoppers that cost $1 each. Overall, for people looking to get a really decent notebook for a great price, and has no desire to play recent games like Crysis that requires high-end parts to play on high settings, this laptop can take anything (not physical) you throw at it.
Pros: its a laptop
Cons: nothing
Summary: Mobile Gaming never felt this good
I bought this 5920G at the IT Show, and my specification is far much better then this. Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz, 800FSB, 6MB L2 Nvidia GF8600M GT 512MB up to 1280 hyper memory HDMI output 3GB DDR2 system RAM 320GB HDD wireless A, B, G and Draft N support you rate this product because of its color? i see the vaule and performances. and you forget to mention it has a great sound system, Virtual Surround Sound DOLBY home theater speaker with build in subwoofer. this laptop is indeed good for gaming. this isn't the best part. bought this at S$2.6k, it comes with a free 22inch LCD monitor and a 20GB externel HDD, how cool is that.
Pros: faster speed and very bright view
Cons: thickness is the problem and weight
Summary: Excellent
recommended to everyone
Pros: Fast and I could buy it at Walmart
Cons: Vista came with it. I had just bought a Linksys Wireless N Notebook and it wouldn't fit.
Summary: Should have bought this a long time ago
I dropped my Dell 1100 and after 6 years it was getting old even with the added memory. I ran over to Walmart and set aside the evening and turned it on and before I realized it it was connected to my Linksys Wireless Router. I checked the speed and I didn't need the high speed Linksys Wireless adapter because this thing is just as fast. I am very pleased with it because it is a much better laptop then the Dell 1100. I should have dropped it a long time ago. The only thing I didn't like was the Vista but I guess I will get used to it.
Pros: Fast, very good spec for the price, good design
Cons: Laptop heated up in the left
Summary: Great laptop, and stupid review I have ever read from internet!
This is definately a good laptop. For the price I've paid, the spec given is simply amazing. T7500 processor, 4GB 800MHz SDRam, 320 GB HDD, 8600GT with 512 DDR2 dedicated memory.Very good spec indeed. In terms of design, this is a pretty looking laptop. The exterior finishes just like the elegent painting of a car. As shinning as a mirror. Whenever I take out my laptop, people compliment about the design. Thus I have no idea why the editor says this is a bad design. His taste must be weird. For the USB port at the right which editor calls it a stupid design, I would rather call the editor stupid. Who on earth would insert pendrive to the right port where it is designed for USB mouse? There are three USB ports at the left so u can insert a huge and fat pedrive into it. The only thing that I'm dissappointed with this laptop is the heat at the left. It heated up once the laptop is switched on, making it warm for my palm to laid on. The heat is bearable but not comfortable. I guess Acer really need to improve the heat generated by the laptop. Unlike the editor has stated, this is really a good laptop. Best value for money and I have no regret getting an unit.
Pros: Everything!
Cons: Weight and touchpad
Summary: What the...... what type of review is this?
Yo..learnt to review and dont post crap like this! This is a great laptop!
Pros: Good design, Excelent Performance
Cons: heavy weight
Summary: Fast but Heavy
I think Acer has a good design differs with others. The performance is excellent. But I don't like with the weight.
