Planning a road trip? Use OnTheWay

In the same way that you would search for directions on Google Maps, you plot in your location, destination and any waypoints, and OnTheWay will then show you all of the interesting places along the way, using Foursquare.
We entered that we'd like to drive from Sydney to Melbourne, and the site showed us a lot of McDonald's and fast food joints, with the occasional tourist sight; so while it's not very adventurous, it could still be of use in knowing where to stop for a rest or a bite to eat.
It's a handy tool for any traveller to have, but just using Foursquare sort of limits the options. It would've had a larger database of interesting things to see and do if it had also added TripAdvisor, for example.
In saying that, OnTheWay was created by start-up TeachStreet and put together in just one week, which is quite impressive. So, whether you're planning ahead or winging it as you go (the app works just as well on your mobile as it does on a PC), it's still a handy tool for any traveller on the road.
See our sister site, CNET, for a quick guide on how to use OnTheWay.
