Samsung SH100 (front view)
We've tested Wi-Fi cameras in the past and while some of them have proven to be quite useful, the wireless concept somehow didn't quite catch on with the photography crowd. However, Samsung's latest SH100 Wi-Fi camera, unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, may just change all that.
As with most Wi-Fi cameras, the SH100 lets users post pictures and videos directly on the Web and back up captured images wirelessly on a PC. What separates it from the rest of the competition, however, is its ability to connect with an Android smartphone and use the handset's screen as a viewfinder. This seems useful in situations where the screen is not easily viewable, such as when performing an overhead or group shot.

According to the press release, the SH100 connects wirelessly to the Android-powered Galaxy S via Wi-Fi. Besides being utilized as a viewfinder, the phone can also be used to remotely activate the shutter release as well as for geotagging purposes (using the handset's GPS). It is unclear at this point in time if the SH100 can be used with other Android smartphones, though compatibility with only the Galaxy S will seriously limit its reach.
Parked under Samsung's "Share" portfolio in its camera lineup, the SH100 is expected to retail at US$199.99 from next month.
Some of the other key features include:
- 14.2-megapixel CCD
- 5x optical zoom lens
- Camera-to-camera sharing with selected Samsung models
- 3-inch LCD screen
- AllShare function (via DLNA)
