For the second year running, Apple has emerged as the leading consumer electronics brand in the US.

According to market research firm The NPD Group, total US consumer tech hardware sales in 2011 came out to almost US$144 billion. However, among the top five consumer electronics brands--Apple, Dell, HP, Samsung and Sony--only the Cupertino-based company saw an increase in sales, by 36 percent over the previous year.

HP came the closest to Apple, but it had a 3 percent decline in sales while Samsung rounded off the top three with a 6 percent drop. In fact, Apple's fourth quarter results were so impressive that they accounted for 19 percent of all sales in that period.

PCs (desktops and laptops) continued to have the lion's share of revenue with US$28 billion in sales. However, the segment saw a slight decrease from 2010. The biggest growth was in the tablets and e-readers category, which doubled in revenue to US$15 billion.
