YOKOHAMA, Japan--Most people are probably unaware that Nikon, a brand synonymous with cameras, makes headsets, too. In fact, this UP multimedia headset, which plays back photos, videos and music, has been around in Japan for more than a year now.
However, unlike most other viewers in the market, the UP comes with onboard Wi-Fi and a built-in Web browser for surfing the Net. The basic UP300 comes with 4GB of built-in storage, while the higher-end UP300x model offers 8GB of memory and A/V input. The UP300x also features a motion sensor for handsfree operation. Users can move their head in different directions to activate the controls, which sounds kinda cool but is probably not for those who like to nod their head when listening to music.
I gave it a go and found the image quality not too bad, though it takes a while to adjust to watching videos and pictures with just one eye. Both the UP300 (69,800 yen) and UP300x (59,800 yen; US$659.50) are currently available only in Japan but can be ordered via the official online Web site (www.upstore.jp), though it's not clear if there's an international warranty available for those who do so.
