I am a native of Ballyfermot, Dublin and I have been involved in traditional music since I was 5. I am lucky in a way to inherit the music from my grandmother?s people, the Dunne Family, who have been involved in music for some six generations now. The most renowned member of this family is Pecker Dunne and other members include the blind busking Dunne brothers, Michael & Christy and the well know piper, Mickey Dunne. I started playing the piano accordion at the age of five; my teacher was Johnny Mitchell, a blind man with extraordinary talent. I stopped played the accordion when I was about 10; the blinkin thing was bigger than me!!! My family have been great friends with the musical Keenan family, of Paddy Keenan the piper. It was here I introduced to the tin whistle by paddy?s brother Thomas & farther Johnny. When I was around 16, I developed an interest in highland pipe bands, so I joined St. Joseph Pipe band in Clondalkin, Dublin for about 3 years or so. It was Johnny Keenan (senior) who got me to take up the Uilleann pipes, so I joined the pipers club in Henrietta St at the age of 19. I have taking an interest in low land piping and have required a set from Ray Slone in the UK. I have been playing both the Uilleann & low land pipes and whistle since then. I have also been involved in Irish Set Dancing for many years. I was part of a group of friends who entered the Pan Celtic Fest in Tralee, Co Kerry for the crack & we won it!! I have great passion for set dancing so I composed a set Dance of my own called The Dublin Lancers. You can find it at http://www.setdance.com/sets/content.html Over the years I have being playing music in many places, meeting & making many friends. It was through music that I found my wife Carmel; she is a very talented musician from Scartaglen, Sliabh Lucra, Co. Kerry. She plays the whistle & pipes also. I have played music in Italy, Germany, England, Cornwall, the Basque?Country and Galicia. I have meet many musical people over the years and one of them is my good friend Erik. I meet Erik at a house party and since then we have been playing music and having the crack, (thats Irish for FUN). We were part of a group called Ceitre Cinn which we did some recording and produced an album for a tour we did in the Basque country. I am concentrating on setting up a pipemaking workshop at the moment and have plans to produce an album of my wife?s music.
