in february 2003, the collapse of three young local bands, prompted three musicians, frustrated by the confines of their previous projects, to embark on a new experiment - thesunsetprovision - which would see them blend their love for all things rock, hardcore and punk into an interesting combination of sparse melodies, brutal chord changes and emotion-fuelled lyrics. the subsequent demo/ep, entitled "auditory nerve cut out", recorded soon after formation, showcases the band's promise as a budding rock act with four songs that show their rough-and-ready approach to music: keeping it simple and still creating an interesting sound. from the strange but somehow apt chord progressions from the mind of guitarist, singer and chief songwriter andy gloster to the energetic driving rhythm section of bassist matt zull to the conversing, heart-felt beats of drummer tom majerczak, every aspect of this band shows their musical foresight, despite their tender years and still-improving skill levels. pushing the limits of their own abilities, the trio is constantly searching for ways to improve themselves as a band together, and the continual updating of their set and hardworking attitude shows this.
and the band has certainly attracted its fair share of attention. much mystery and anticipation surrounded their first gig, and the boys certainly delighted the crowd for 50 mins barely after their formation. by august 2003 the boys had already placed third in a freeza battle of the bands. how did these guys go from making the hard-nosed straight up punk rock of local heroes anti-ant, the fun pop-punk-ska of rumour has it and the gender bending punk-rock of the invalides, to taking such a different view of the musical tradition they all grew up on? with comparisons to the blueline medic, promise ring and strike anywhere; and influences as far ranging as minor threat, hey mercedes and mineral; it seems somehow difficult to understand where this music came from. the group has also made appearances on syn tv and syn fm with an acoustic performance. there is no doubting the fact that this band puts everything they have into their music, and they won't quit until they have nothing left to say, and the critics agree. the boys have had seen expressed interest from local labels transending (josh wins again, fall out boy) and redline records (blueline medic, big heavy stuff), as well as strong, overwhelming support from peers and members of the local scene. now in 2004, the group is regularly playing shows in and around melbourne, including the arthouse, melbournes punk mecca and have recently snapped a clothing endorsement from melbourne based 5to9 clothing. while a record deal is at this stage not on the cards, there is certainly a big chance in the future, as thesunsetprovision continue to develop its widely influenced post-punk sound.
