The appeal of toy cameras

There is something about toy cameras that attracts me. Maybe it's their unobtrusive look and size which let me snag candid shots easily, or it could also be the sub-standard picture quality which lends a certain charm. Shooters like the Lomo and Holga cannot be replaced by today's digicams. This is because most snappers these days produce consistent picture quality, which can look boring after a while. On the other hand, toy point-and-shoots have lousy quality control and use cheap materials, hence the effect from each shooter may look different.

The Yashica EZ F521, with its retro looks and plastic lens, attempts to emulate the Holga. Both are really simple to use and produce some wacky photos. But does the Yashica live up to the hype of being a digital toy camera? Check out the hands-on I did with it.
