  WHAT'S HOT THIS WEEK

Stephen Tong
Writer, Notebooks & Desktops
Dear Readers
How's the week going? Let's dispense with the technical commentary and try something new for a change. This time round, I shall give some insight into what happens over at CNETAsia. Basically, the week is spent either doing features, reviews, and of course, this newsletter (which I hope you enjoy!). We are unleashed once in a while to go for press events and check out the latest in tech stuff and to mingle with fellow scribes. However, much time is spent playing with the latest gadgets, the most recent being the Compaq Presario V2000, NEC Versa M540 and, only yesterday, the Everex PC which promises much with its Windows Media Center interface. Coincidentally, the new 2005 edition was released last week (for more info, take a look below). Also, we do value your feedback, so don't be shy about hitting our inbox with comments on what you would like to see in the notebooks and desktops channels. We're always happy to oblige.

Stop annoying pop-ups (by Robert Vamosi)

Q: I get a lot of pop-ups that interfere with daily functions on my computer. I have contacted Microsoft, which had me try many things that didn't work. I use Internet Explorer on a new XP machine.

A: Here are a couple of ideas for you:
  • Windows XP SP2 (the new service pack for Windows XP), will block pop-ups within Internet Explorer.
  • Download the free Google or Yahoo toolbar plug-in. Not only will they help you search the Internet, they also block pop-ups.
  • Try a third-party app, such as our favorite, PopUpCop.
  • Switch to Firefox, a free Web browser alternative to Internet Explorer that also serves as a pop-up blocker.
