National Day

Posted by willmoss
It's the middle of the National Day golden week holiday in China, and I'm in Singapore right now, enjoying a well-earned break after a few hectic weeks in the office. I probably won't be posting much until after I return to Beijing, next Tuesday, the 10th. But in the meantime, I thought I would put up a photo for you. I was at Tian'anmen Square on October 1, which is National Day, amidst the immense crowds of Chinese holidaymakers, tourists and Beijing citizenry busily photographing every inch of commemorative displays of the Olympic mascots, the Three Gorges Dam, Tibet's Potala Palace and an enormous portrait commemorating the 136th anniversary of the birth of Dr Sun Yat Sen, founder of the modern Chinese republic.

However, my brother, who was visiting Beijing and who is unusually tall in a way that makes Chinese people stare, may have been the single most-photographed thing on the square that day, beating out even the venerable Dr Sun. I should have charged money for photographs with him. It would have paid for my plane ticket.

More after the holidays, when I get back to Beijing.
