Direct-To-Home (DTH) services are taking off in India. Tata Sky became the second private DTH operator when it launched its services in August, nearly three years after Dish TV introduced DTH services in October 2003.





There are three players offering DTH services in India viz. Dish TV, Tata Sky and DD Direct Plus. Two other companies--Reliance and Sun TV--are likely to enter the market soon.

The Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) recently conducted a study to understand the demographics of the Indian online matrimonial match seekers. The study puts the market size at about Rs50-60 crores at the end of financial year 2005-06.

Broadband growing at narrowband speeds

The growth of broadband in India is not picking up as expected. According to a recent Telecom Regulatory Authority of India report, India added a paltry 0.15 million broadband users in July 2006. The total broadband connections in the country have reached 1.70 million.

The user base nearly quadrupled from 0.43 million in July 2005, but the growth in additions has been slow. In the first four months of the current financial year, 0.35 million users were added compared with 0.25 million during the same period last year.

India shuns OLPC

In April this year, Nicholas Negroponte of MIT Media Laboratory proposed to the Government of India to sell one million laptops, at the rate of US$100 per unit, under the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) project.

But India's ministry of Human Resources Development rejected the idea.

Yuva means youth in Hindi. These expressions very well summarize the Indian ethos, as one of the world's oldest civilisations having one of the largest young population advances into the 21st Century with confidence and hope.

More than 50 percent of India's population are below the age of 25. That is over 500 million people, nearly twice the population of the US.
