Nokia unleashes Wi-Fi phones in India

Posted by vcbothra
Six new Nokia handsets released in India have Wi-Fi. Half of these dual-mode 3G handsets are from the N-series multimedia lineup, while the others are E-series business phones. In older Nokia handsets, only the 9500 Communicator had Wi-Fi.

The handsets viz. N93, N91, N80, E70, E61, E60 are priced between US$400 (Rs18,000) and US$800 (Rs36,000). They use miniSD cards for storage, which mean the flash media can be reused in digital cameras and other devices which support this popular format.

These handsets support third-party VoIP applications which use the embedded SIP protocols to make Internet calls. The calls are routed via the WLAN access point and not through GPRS. There are talks of Skype being ported to these Nokia S60 3rd Edition handsets.

There is a wireless LAN wizard which helps you to locate and set up a WLAN connection when in the vicinity of either a home or public hotspot. But there aren't many public hotspots in the country as of now.

Also, usage of Wi-Fi and broadband at homes is not very high. But for those having WLAN connectivity at home, it opens up new possibilities such as listening to Internet radio and downloading rich content (MP3s and videos) directly onto the mobile.

The biggest impact these handsets will have in the near future will be on enterprises. Companies can deploy an Avaya or Cisco IP PBX and connect these devices to their corporate phone networks, enabling functions like four-digit dialing and assisted call answering for employees.

Among others, Windows Mobile phone manufacturers have support for WLAN in most of their high-end models. Phones such as the O2 Xda Atom, iMate Jasjar and HP iPaq start upwards of Rs34,000 (US$700).

Around a week ago, there were six new Nokia phones and handsets that were released in the Indian market. There are already other WiFi phones – like the Edge-Core Skype WiFi Phone WM4201 – in the market that allows you to use your Skype account without having to be near a computer.

I need to contact a supplier who is offering WiFi phones that will utilize the current and future "N" standard mobile phones with fast handoff. I also need a further explanation of what can be expected and when, for the fast handoff standards to come.
