Using the phones

It is nearly August and a man's fancy turns to moving to a new apartment.

And that usually means that when I am in most need of money, I am most likely to spend it. So it was to be expected that my flatmate and I journeyed to Central, Hong Kong's financial district, for a beer and a Blackberry.

We went to 1010's store in Lan Kwai Fong, wondering if I could transfer my service to its service and, in the course of the transfer, pick up a cool new phone, for free. Hong Kong is wild with these offers. Especially with 3G phones which are subsidized by Hutchison 3G, in order to move them off the shelves.

But at the 1010 store, we found that new customers actually had to--shock of shocks--pay for their phones!?

Symantec warns of Firefox

This is not exactly a consumer gadget item, but those of you who use Firefox, from Mozilla, might want to know about Symantec's new virus warning.

Symantec has recently seen some interesting uses of malicious Mozilla Firefox plug-ins being used to steal information. Today, a new threat called InfoStealer.Snifula surfaced that forwards information from Web form submissions to a remote attacker. Why I won't be going 3G in this generation

Hong Kong doesn't need 3G phones. There, I said it.

The metropolis of just over seven million people is just too small, efficient and crowded to warrant the purchase. There are basic human behaviors that don't warrant 3G phone technology and make it no more than a gimmick.

Serving up an Acer

Some time during the month of June, the humidity and heat rose to such an unbearable degree in Hong Kong that my Dell laptop fell victim to it.

Without warranty, the lonely laptop became just another heap of scrap for the computer guys in Mong Kok to pilfer through. They extracted what they could and I don't know what happened next. I never went back to recover the hulk.

I did buy an Acer Aspire 5670. I want to caution people buying new laptops in Hong Kong that a good price may not always mean a satisfactory computing experience.
