Hitting the Spike on the head

Posted by sprocket
I like to leaf through Spike's blog about his sundry and tawdry affairs in Hong Kong, not because I am at all interested in his personal life, but because occasionally the man doth present entertaining tech gadget stories with which I can find sympathy.

To be brief, Spike has a little trouble with a phone of his.

Last night, I was talking to a friend on the phone, which is something I rarely do. I'm usually a text and SMS kind of guy. She had just "inherited" a phone from her sister and she was complaining that she could not use it properly because the interface was so screwy to her eyes, she couldn't even figure out if she was pushing talk or speakerphone.

In Seoul, one of the big talks about mobile phones is about limiting the amount of things that happen inside the phone and within the interface.

Did you know that 41 percent of mobile device users prefer to carry two devices and that 34 percent would not mind carrying three?

Regardless, I would love to have one simple phone that has about three buttons on it:

1. Talk
2. Text
3. Virtual Keyboard, which would then disappear once you've tapped away on the screen.

Okay, I'm oversimplifying. Being able to run Google calendar would be nice. Reading email, too. And being able to get streaming video for conference calls would be decent. I guess all of those things can get pretty complicated.

Oh Doug, you know I don't blog about the sundry and tawdry affairs so much any more. And tawdry is in the eye of the reader! (Yeah, I know, everyone was rushing to click on the link and check it out till I wrote the first sentence.)

My personal insanity is that when I leave the house, I always take:

Dopod 838pro phone
Blackberry 8707v
Canon G7 camera
80 gig video iPod
Jawbone bluetooth headset

And when I travel, add to that:
Archos 604 PMP
Lenovo X41 laptop (not of my choosing)
Altec Lansing InMotion ipod speakers

(You can just imagine how much space in my suitcase is taken up by chargers and cables vs trivial stuff like clothing.)

One device to do it all? Not in my lifetime.

I think that Spike is taking the comment too seriously. Nevertheless, spike is good at writing about music, technology and sundry.
