MTV Networks Asia Pacific fires staff

Posted by sprocket
Got a press release in the inbox this afternoon that says President Nigel Robbins is stepping down and a large number of staff have been made redundant so as to bring in more local talent.

Beginning of a trend? What does this do to possible acquisitions and, better yet, innovations in consumer goods? See, Singapore is likely not making any money for MTV as a regional headquarter, but in places where MTV is making money there are lots of new gadgets coming out.

MTV Japan is already working with mobile phone distributors to make "branded" phones that have MTV hot buttons which take users right to MTV content wirelessly.

Can we see more such action in Singapore, once local talent steps in? Relevance to Hong Kong, 85 percent. My hunch is that we will see departures from Hong Kong offices soon. But that's just a hunch, since I'm basing it on the fact that most of the redundancies this year have been regional. Hong Kong is a regional office.

Relevance to online consumer goods? 100 percent. MTV is heavily into online content. But, as someone on another blog wrote, Whatever happened to Urge?.
