Singapore schools go high-tech

Posted by ooginlee
Singapore schools are going even more high-tech, with five schools identified for the first phase of the Government's FutureSchools initiative. The schools range from primary to secondary and are Beacon Primary, Hwa Chong Institution, Jurong Secondary, Canberra Primary and Crescent Girls.

Each school has its own implementations of IT. These include learning in 3D environments using head-on display and gloves to explore inside the human body, podcasting, and online learning portals. Some students will also be equipped with tablet PCs and PDAs, and work in a wireless campus.

Creative sees red, Singaporeans supersonic walkers

Creative Technology seems to be losing its groove as it reported its fourth loss in five quarters. Things aren't quite looking up for the company as it recorded S$36 million loss for its fiscal third quarter, and said it would look to cut operating expenses by 17 percent.

There was also a 29 percent slump in MP3 sales for the quarter, shrinking its revenues by 18.5 percent to S$183.8 million for the quarter.

Posted by ooginlee
OK, I have to confess. I'm not a Mac user. But when was the last time you heard this smug reply from a Mac fan that Mac is so much more secure? Even experienced IT journalists and my friends have said this to me. They are willing to splurge on the Mac, because it looks cooler (which I agree), is easier to use (which I also agree), and because (and this is where they will pause for emphasis) the Mac is so much more secure. True? I never thought so, but who am I to say otherwise? Well, now Symantec's CTO has said so.

What's my first name?

Posted by ooginlee
There's something I seriously don't understand. First names and last names. For the Western World, a typical name goes something like Simon Smith. Simon is the first name, because it comes first. And Smith, which is the family or surname, is the last name. Now I can understand if Australians or Americans get mixed up with my first names and last names, since it's Oo Gin Lee, and not Gin Lee Oo. But what I can't accept are local Singaporeans who act like we have become part of a different continent.

I asked for sex and got a haircut offer instead

Posted by ooginlee
Don't get me wrong. I'm 100 percent faithful to my wife. But I just couldn't resist testing for sex. On Yellow Pages' new Mobile Yellow Pages service, that is. How it works is that you type in keywords like "Pizza at Upper Bukit Timah Road" and send the SMS to 77777. MYP then sends you two SMSes with name, address and contact of pizza joints in that vicinity.

Just for the fun of it, I keyed in "Sex", and what I got was HairPlus Uni-Sex saloon and SEX in the City. I called up the latter and asked what they sold. "Vibrators, men toys," was the snappy answer of the cheery little lady who picked up the call.
