Rounding Up IFA & the Rest...

Posted by ifa

As a lone ranger, after days of walking around the entire convention centre of 26 halls and only managed to cover most of the major brands (yes, it is impossible for one person to be able to cover everything),

Here is some stuff that you haven't seen:

At Panasonic, they have an eye-catching, bling bling DVD player that is showcased. I was wondering what does the number means at this display so we asked one of the Panasonic promoters.

In the end, we found out that it only means that they have actually sold 3 million sets of this particular DVD player!

Erm, quite...duh. But I guess this is a "pride" thing.

So out of all the LCD TV, cell phones, cameras and whatnot, Miele showcased their products too!

I don't know, but who is going there to look at vacuum cleaners, rice cookers and blenders here? Hmm...

At some of the halls, there are also a lot of booths from China, Taiwan and a few from Korea. They sell brands that we've never heard of...

Here is a keyboard that looks like it is meant for kids. It looks cute, but for some reasons, I think that kids should start off using the normal keyboard that everyone uses. Learning from kiddy keyboard and then moving to the original type will be a slightly different user experience that they have to get used to.

A redundant process, I say.

I happened to spot a Sony laptop, which looks like a Macbook. Apparently, I haven't seen it in Singapore yet.

Laptop models like these should be available in Asian markets. They'll probably sell like hotcakes since everyone is so crazy over Mac's designs.

In between all the halls, there are cute food booths like these where you can buy hotdogs and beverages.

If you haven't known, going visually HD also means that there is HD for audio too. There are 7.1 surround speakers for it. At Panasonic, they have an enclosed area that plays Jazz club music to showcase the wonders of these 7.1 speakers.

There are 5 huge LCD TV in this room with musicians in each TV. It was quite an experience watching the TV performance both visually and audibly. They look like they are just right in front of your eyes.

So that's it for my trip at IFA 2007!
Hope you guys enjoy my little adventure.

Hello Santa!

Posted by ifa
After seeing hundreds of gadgets and electronic products at IFA 2007 and getting awed by almost everything there, here is my simple wish list at the end of the day. An extremely simple wish list, nothing extravagant for now.

Wish #1 - Sony Ericsson K770i

While I always swear by a basic phone like my current Nokia 6131, which can survive countless times of bad abuse, I have been looking around for a blackberry phone as well as a decent camera phone lately. For the latter, I'm looking at Sony Ericsson K770i.

Personally, I don't like jumping into the bandwagon just to be having something that is the latest but something really good or has the sophisticated functions that I need. Cos' I only care about how well my phone can serve me in whatever I want and not just getting a new phone every now and then with multifarious functions that I might never use. I've always wanted to get a Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot phone for its beautiful image capture.

Colours wise, it is also available in sandy beige colour but I was hoping that they have black or white instead. I think the design will go very well with the latter but unavailable colours.

Wish #2 - Samsung LCD HDTV

There is no size limit for this TV. It will be fantastic to own one at least 42” Samsung LCD TV at home and hang it on the wall. It will save up a lot of space and with the easy to reach ports and plugs, it is great for gaming too.

Wish #3 - Samsung Printer

Besides its colour that matches my PC (okay, by now you should know that I'm very particular about colours), this sleek printer is THE coolest printer to have.

With that, I sent my wish list to Santa - a fictional character that never exists.

Can someone hear me? : (

Sony

After seeing Samsung, Philips, Hitachi, Toshiba and whatnot, I was expecting to see a fairly big exhibition at Sony; but its public exhibition seems to be rather disappointing. Their sections for blu-ray disc, digital cameras, LCD TV, cell phones and etc were partitioned into really small and unimpressive segments, failing to attract or keep the attention of the visitors like me.

So I notice a press/business entrance to its enclosed area and I thought it might be more interesting inside. So my assumption was right. They meant business with this expensive looking temporary lounge they have here.

This place looked and felt distinctly different from its normal exhibition area. It was full of businessmen and press. There was even a corner for cooking!

To be honest, I felt pretty hungry when I walked passed this counter of red meat.

To avoid finding excuses to get some free food from them, I quickly moved on to another section beside their private lounge to check out some of the models, which are not displayed at their public showcase.

This is a rather small and cute-looking CPU from Sony.

Along with it, it's a Mac-looking keyboard which looks really good! Well, I guess anything that looks almost like an Apple product can't go too wrong in terms of its aesthetics.

I also dropped by Loewe's exhibition at IFA. According to Arzu, the representative from IFA, this brand is apparently very popular in Europe.

Overall, they have a very clean design and showcase of their full HD, HDTV models.

This reminds me of iMac but it is actually a digital television that provides a central access to all your personal music, film and photos. The coolest part for this is that it does not require any cables. Just put the plug in the socket and it connects to your CPU through the mains!

In other words, the mains act as a data transmitter here and this is a new technology that we are looking at here. The transfer rate is up to 200 Mbit per second, which is 70 times faster than a conventional internet connection. Talk about insanely fast transfer rate. Ingenious.

Te(ch)xtiles

While LCD TV, digital cameras and cell phones are aplenty at IFA, there is this interesting booth by smartTextiles that I've checked out.

These mannequins are dressed in the latest generation of wearable electronics and e-fashion. Even though this is not something that we have not heard of since there was already invention like the "stun" jackets in the early 2000s, wearable electronics are still uncommon in the market.

One of the highlights at this showcase was Pierre Cardin Sun jacket.

This jacket provides the wearer permanent mobility as its solar cells in the upper sleeve of the jacket loads a storage item that guarantees permanent access and use of mobile phone, PDA or even an mp3 player.

Like the name of this jacket suggests, it only requires the sunlight for its energy source, which is limitless unless the world has come to an end.

While I thought it is really awesome because getting a flat battery is like getting disconnected from the rest of the world, I'm not sure of wearing something like that though.

Another highlight of this showcase by smartTextiles was the integrated TV station jacket by Bayern Digital Radio. This is also the first jacket of its kind that will be available in the markets very soon.

With no disrespect, I thought the mannequins looked cheap and ugly. With such cool products that they have, which are probably very expensively priced, the presentation of these items could have been classier and more sophisticated. It'll definitely increase the perceived value of these products, attracting more business deals at the same time.

Well, these are some of the exciting products to watch out for in the future of clothing, but for now I shall stick to my normal clothing till my lifestyle has reached a new level like this.

Oh, pimp my ride

Posted by ifa

Okay, these were the only sexy models that I could find here at the Car Audio/Video section. The ladies in red hot pants had been dancing and strutting around before the photograph was taken.

Again, there were not many models and photographers, unlike in Asian countries. I am beginning to suspect that we Asians probably have a perverted culture or something.

The people at Berlin were generally quite shy towards strangers. So far, I've been enjoying my stay here because there isn’t any race discrimination even though the ratio of Asians here is extremely small. I guess the people here are very open-minded and mature in that manner.

Here was a part of the Car Audio section where you could find tons of ridiculously pimped-out cars that had been mod with crazy audio and LCD TV screens. There wasn't a huge crowd here though.

Among the many cars, I spotted this, which I thought was terribly cool compared to the rest out there. The powerful influence of MTV's Pimp My Ride was unmistakable.

Crazy!

Besides having a TV at the side of the car doors, which was obviously for showing off, there was a row of LCDs right in front of the driver's seat which serves as a great distraction while driving along a busy road. If your country's climate is not cold enough, sitting inside this car will be really hot--once again, literally.

The audio system was pretty hardcore, too. I wonder how much would this entire system cost.

Generally, car lovers who would like to have pimped-up rides would love this section to bits. But really, mind-blowing cars need hot models, too.

On a separate note, it was a great pleasure for me to meet the lovely ladies from IFA management today.

Thank you once again for organizing this event and contest with CNET Asia!

Tomorrow will be the last day that I’ll be blogging for IFA 2007 here. I am missing Berlin already!
