How do they earn from their Web sites (part 2)?

Posted by hieuvahuy
You may recall in my last post that I mentioned two most popular news sites in Vietnam, the Vnexpress.net and Dantri.com.vn, and how they make money from selling banner ads.

Yes, banner ads are the most popular form of online advertising market in my country. This post, I'll look at how other sites in Vietnam (aside from the news sites) are making their buck in different ways. By "buck", I truly mean the American Dollar.

First, we find out what the top sites in Vietnam are in terms of Alexa's ranking. You can find it on this page. It lists the top Web sites in Vietnamese. Click on "See top sites in all 'Vietnamese' categories" in the lower right corner, and you will be sent to the list of sites in order of Alexa's rankings.

News portals aside, most of them are popular because of their free content (i.e. games, music, movies) contributed by a large number of people. Here are some domains you may associate with: gamevn.com (a games forum), yeuamnhac.com (a music forum), gamethu.net (another games forum), and trochoiviet.com (yet another games forum).

Now how can these Web sites thrive financially? Where do they get their funds? Well, the answers are simple: 1) Some of them get backed by large companies; 2.) sell banner ads; 3.) (this is what I am talking about) sell ads for Google Adwords or AdBrite.com or AdEngage.com.

I am quite amazed when many Webmasters are able to earn bucks from "American partners" like Google, Adbrite and AdEngage. Let's have a closer look at these partnerships on Vietnamese sites.

Google Adwords on Trochoiviet.com--a free online games portal.

AdEngage sells ad links on manhhai.tk--a music-sharing Web site.

You can see that Web sites that are providing illegal contents are increasingly funded by the growing number of online ad agencies like Google, AbBrite and AdEngage. I feel that humanity can never stop the circulation of banned content on the Net. Not to mention those Websites I listed above, a large number of sites providing sexual content, music, movies will only grow bigger and bigger. They are virtually funded by legitimate companies like Google. Well, if you want to win the enemy, you better cut their food supply.
