Will Hutchison bring iPhone to Indonesia?

Posted by budip
Yeah, it's breaking news for Indonesia's cellular market. The latest report about Hutchison Telecommunications International Ltd which said it will be offering Apple's iPhone via Hong Kong and Macau, delivered another important message: Will it also bring the iPhone to Indonesia, one of the emerging markets of Asia?

There are two possibilities:

First, the country's biggest operator, Telkomsel, will offer the iPhone to its customers. Telkomsel is state-owned company, with 35 percent of its stake owned by Singapore giant SingTel. As reported earlier, SingTel and its mobile associates will bring Apple Inc's popular iPhone to Singapore, India, Australia and the Philippines later this year. And probably, according to my opinion, it will bring this to Indonesia also.

Second, Hutchison will team up with Apple to offer the iPhone. The telecom company operates mobile phone services in Hong Kong, Thailand, Israel, Macau, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Vietnam. So, Indonesia will be its next logical step to offer the iPhone.

I wrote in my blog:
So, since it already launched its own cellular service here, there is a possibility for Hutchison to bring iPhone to Indonesia. One thing that I am not convinced about is that its service, 3, is still a newcomer in the country, meaning it has a small network coverage only. Just compare to the the giant Telkomsel here!

The iPhone will likely turns out to be a more expensive SMS/Call-capable iPod unless telco adjust data tariff down ;)
