Indonesia's CDMA subscribers surpass 10 million
Posted by budip
Over four years ago, CDMA2000 1x was still considered a new kid on the block in Indonesia's telecommunications market due to the high number of GSM subscribers at the time. Today, Indonesia has emerged as a new hotbed for CDMA2000 1x deployments due to the rising number of subscribers, high numbers of operators, and the market's positive response.
There are about 60 million people using mobile phones in the country at present, and almost 10 million of them are on CDMA2000.
The total number of CDMA subscribers in Indonesia has surpassed 10 million under five brands: Telkom's Flexi, Bakrie Telecom's Esia, Mobile-8's Fren, Indosat's StarOne, and Sampoerna Telecom's Ceria.
CDMA operators have become more popular now in Indonesia, but they admit that they still face the particular problem. What's that? The image problem: CDMA services have been identical with the cheaper price--compared with GSM services in the country.
However, it's the matter of time. To some extent, users didn't really care about what technology platform they used, but rather how affordable the price was and how convenient to use.
Personally, in term of its usage for Indonesian people, I prefer CDMA to GSM. The reason? CDMA2000 technologies offer the highest voice capacity and data throughput using the least amount of spectrum, lowering the cost of delivery for operators and delivering superior customer experience for the end users.
That is why operators can offer cheap prices because of its efficient technology!
The cheap price is fine, but if CDMA operators want to offer high-class services, they could use other brands (instead of the existing cheaper price brands) and offer the CDMA 1xEV-DO for high-speed data connection.

With more CDMA-based cellular handsets entering the market, variety and price are no longer the main obstacles to the industry’s growth in Indonesia, operators claim.
When CDMA technology entered the Indonesian market some six years ago, most operators targeted entry-level users by positioning themselves in the fixed wireless market and offering much lower prices than GSM technology.
Its coverage area restrictions and the "cheap" image have fed CDMA's reputation as an underdog with technological limitations.
