Finally, PayPal available in Indonesia

Good news hit Indonesia's cyberspace and blogosphere recently. PayPal is now available in Indonesia! This is a really good news for Indonesians to use this service for their online payment solution.

Prior to this announcement, Indonesian users could not apply for a PayPal account. My fellow countrymen, especially those living here, were previously unable to send and receive payment through the PayPal service. Of course, this wasn't good since I could not even contribute online donations which require a PayPal account.

I don't know what exactly happened with regard to PayPal's policy, but it could most probably be spurred on by increasing cyberfraud in Indonesia.

But now things seem better, with PayPal's decision to put Indonesia on its latest approved list. PayPal has announced that residents in 48 countries can now use PayPal in their local markets to send money online. The new markets include Indonesia, the Philippines (as my colleague Joey Alarilla already blogged about here), Croatia, Fiji, Vietnam and Jordan.

PayPal has also added support for a further 10 currencies to its Internet payment system. The latest currencies to be added are the Czech koruna, Danish krona, Hong Kong dollar, Hungarian forint, New Zealand dollar, Norwegian krona, Polish zloty, Singapore dollar, Swedish krona and Swiss franc.


Indonesia in PayPal

Founded in 1998, PayPal, enables any individual or business with an email address to securely, easily and quickly send and receive payments online. It serves as an electronic alternative to traditional paper methods such as checks and money orders.

PayPal has quickly become a global leader in online payment solutions with 100 million account members worldwide. Available in 103 countries and regions around the world, the company claims 14 million accounts globally, and total transactions of US$8.9 billion in the second quarter of 2006.

Located in San Jose, California, PayPal was acquired by eBay Inc. in October 2002.

Do be aware that the latest "newcomers"--along with other tens of countries which had been approved earlier--are able only to send money instead of receive payment. Why do their PayPal accounts have send-only capabilities? According to PayPal:
Due to the complexities of global finance, members in certain countries and regions need to meet the criteria to fully utilize our system, but this is not a reflection on the customer. PayPal is constantly working to expand and improve services for our customers. We hope to expand our features for these countries and regions, but we cannot give a timetable for this expansion.

It's OK, better to have sending capabilities than nothing like before. However, it's the first significant step towards having convenient online transactions on the Internet, right?

To withdraw money from paypal for non US-Citizen, there are a couples ways that I know.

1. Sell to others our money in Paypal account and get the cash in hand, but this is illegal by the TOS of Paypal

2. Open a Virtual Office, but if you don't earn money from internet yet, just open an account first, after you have money in the first account, then you have to open second account, why you have to open 2 account? this is for your security.

3. You can open a US Bank account.

Agree, PayPal is important for Internet purchase. However, when trying to purchase at many US commercial websites, the IP address is automatically recognized by them, and my purchases was cancelled. So having a PayPal account is already a tedious process, I have to wait until my credit card statement is arrived, to find the 4 digit code, and enter the code at activation page of PayPal, which has made me waiting for about a month just to get my PayPal account usable. This is understandable from the security standpoint. As a Palm LifeDrive PDA user, I need to purchase upgrade software applications from a US based commercial website. Please let me know how to solve the problem.

This is purely theoretical. My local bank does not have the supposed "7-digit verification number".

And newsflash, BNI workers DO NOT KNOW WHAT ON EARTH PAY PAL IS.

It's a great idea from PayPal, but they forgot one crucial fact: Indonesian banks are too stupid to do PayPal. Heck, they can't even manage their online credit card system well since errors always come up.

Yes, they suck that bad. Congrats to PayPal. Sorry to us. So much for the Indonesian launching.

Hi Budi, I in the UK with we have no problems using PayPal or eBay, but I wasn't fully aware that PayPal is now approved in Indonesia (it shows how lazy I am on online search). I am currently working with young people (charity work - tanpa pamrih) in Indonesia and would very much like to help them set up small businesses to combat the current economic turmoil in the country.

Now that PayPal is approved, is eBay also approved for Indonesian users? I feel that if eBay has already included China, Thailand and other developing countries in Asia, they should not really exclude Indonesia and deprive the young talented Indonesians from benefiting from doing business online.

If you know more than I do, please let me know. Thank you so much for this valuable article.

Paypal sucks. Even when I was living in the US I can never get a reply from their customer service. And then this one time, when I did get it, the answer given by one of their "specialist" was totally off topic. They gave a completely different answer from the one I asked. If I already had problems there in the US, where I lived in the same time zone, good luck troubleshooting your account here in Indo.

Shoo, go away paypal from Indonesia. We do okay without you here.

Does anyone know the latest on Indonesian PayPal accounts?

I have set up a web page for a friend on Bali promoting his service. He drives tourists in his van. I would like to know how he can set up a pay pal account and and place a button on his web page. His bank is in Bali, Indonesia but most of his clients are from: Austrailia, US, Western European countries, and a few others. How can he set it up to have multiple currencies placed into his account and then how does he exchange these currencies into the Indonesian Rupiah? Is that something his bank does or does PayPal or someone else do this?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thank you.
