PayPal for the Philippines... sorta
Posted by babelmachine
The Philippines is finally one of the countries recognized by PayPal.
Thanks to a heads up from techie Migs Paraz, who posted it in the Yahoo! Groups PH-Cyberview, I've now also signed up for a PayPal account.
The Philippines, however, is a send-only country, meaning you can send to anyone in the PayPal network, but can't withdraw funds.
I signed up with my Visa card, and now have a sending limit of US$500.
Paraz initially posted in the mailing list to inform users that someone had left a comment on his old blog entry regarding PayPal Philippines. This was the comment left on his blog by someone who used the nick "insider":
This is an interesting development, indeed. It's a big step for Filipino Internet users based in the Philippines to finally be able to pay for goods and services online using PayPal.
Of course, we also want to be able to withdraw and, as I blogged before, Filipino Internet users have been lobbying for PayPal in the Philippines. This online lobby was initiated by Filipino pro blogger J Angelo Racoma.
In fact, now that I'm checking the PayPal in the Philippines site, I see that he has posted this update:
Racoma has also posted his reaction to the development in this entry on the PayPal for the Philippines blog.
Let's see what will happen next.

Paypal Philippines will go live tonight. It's only a send money feature and thus the account cannot receive money. Paypal Philippines account can only send up to US$500 for the eternity of the account.

PayPal has opened up its send-only service in the Philippines.
This is a good development, but not good enough. We still need your support!

This is good news for those who wants to pay products and services which can only be paid through Paypal.
Paypal really opened the doors for the Philippines but there is a bad effect in our economy since it only allows sending money. All transactions is going out and money is leaving our country, our economy suffers. I would like to encourage everyone to visit digg.com... and letÂ’s dig it to let the world know the effect of limitations in Philippine Paypal accounts.
