Virtual Worlds, Telepresence, and Online Collaboration
Occasional comments on virtual worlds, telepresence, and online communication. I want to be able to experience the people on the other side of the planet as though they were in the room with me.
uWorld 1.20
Posted by SuezanneCBaskervilleSuezanneCBuOnenet released an upgrade to their uWorld virtual world application recently.
Since installing this upgrade, the application is not able to connect to the uWorld system.Â
This is on a Windows XP, U.S. English localized, with the East Asian language pack installed.Â
The previous version 1.16 of uWorld worked fine.Â
The primary source of information in English for the uWorld virtual world was the forums at www.ideashape.cn. Unfortunately, these have been taken out of commission by the recent earthquake in China.Â
Novoking, where are you?
Posted by SuezanneCBaskervilleSuezanneCBThe Novoking virtual world is supposed to be open to public testing now... (bulk of old post deleted).Â
Novoking did in fact open up, and I was able to use the beta for a good while, and I enjoyed it while it worked.
Sometime around April of 2009 I could no longer connect to the Novoking beta, and despite a great deal of effort, I was unable to figure out why.
I hope it's working out, it was real nice while it worked for me.Â
Save Sky Eclipse, crasher of sims: SL Jira VWR-2281
Posted by SuezanneCBaskervilleSuezanneCBSecond Life user Sky Eclipse has a problem: something about their account or their avatar causes the sim they are in to crash. The sim they are in crashes as soon as they log in to it , if I understand the problem correctly, leaving them no way to do anything like remove attachments or delete the last few items they acquired.
The only solution for this problem lies in the hands of Linden Lab: either fix Sky Eclipse's account, or fix the sim crash problem such that Sky Eclipse's account remains just as it is but the sim Sky is in doesn't crash.
There's a Second Life Jira issue to vote on related to Sky Eclipse's problem. The Jira issue is at https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2281 ; if you'd like to help Sky Eclipse by convincing Linden Lab to devote resources to solving this problem go to https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2281 and vote for the issue. (Only members of SL can vote for SL Jira issues, so if you aren't an SL user, just join SL at secondlife.com, then vote for Sky's Jira issue. )
There's a forums.secondlife.com thread on this topic at http://forums.secondlife.com/showthread.php?p=1661915#post1661915 .
The Sky Eclipse Jira issue VWR-2281 reads as follows

Getting started with Hipihi virtual world
Posted by SuezanneCBaskervilleSuezanneCBSince the company that is creating the Hipihi virtual world system is located in China, the Hipihi’s initial native language is Chinese. English and other language versions are planned. Currently it is possible to run Hipihi on English Windows XP SP2 by installing Asian language support and adjusting some settings.
If you speak English but not Chinese, you don’t need to try to fill out the Chinese language registration, there’s an English language registration on the Hipihi company’s site at:
http://www.hipihi.com/application/application_en.jsp .
There is now a English language forum in the Hipihi company's forums. The url for the Hipihi company forums is at http://forums.hipihi.com/main.jhtml .
IdeaShape Studios, operated by Second Life avatar Jolly Heron, has an English language forum at http://www.ideashape.cn for current and prospective Hipihi users. I recommend that everyone trying the Hipihi beta register at the IdealShape forums as well as at the company forum mentioned above.
Jolly Heron has also created a MSN Instant Message chat group for non-Chinese-speaking Hipihi users called hipihi@msn.com. You can join that if you have MSN Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, or Yahoo Messenger. Other IM programs may be compatible as well.
Unless you just like doing things the hard way, you would probably want to sign up with the company forums and the IdeaShape forums, and join the MSN group so you can get help with getting the program installed and running, and to contact people.
An English language Hipihi interface guide can be found in the IdeaShape forums at
http://221.11.104.147/bbs/upload/Help/HiPiHi_Interface.pdf
or you can get the Hipihi interface English guide from the thread in the official Hipihi company forums at:

Hipihi Language settings:
I will attempt to make the Regional and Language settings required to run Hipihi clear below.
Install the East Asian language pack.
Once the East Asian language pack is installed, do the following:
Set the Default Input Language to English United States - Chinese Simplified, US Keyboard, as shown at the top of the picture below, and In the Installed services, also shown in the picture below, enable Chinese Simplified in the EN - English United States section of the list.

In the Regional and Languages settings, on the Advanced tab, select “Chinese PRC” from the drop down list right below the words “Select a language to match the language version of the non-Unicode programs you want to use”.

In addition to installing the Asian language pack and setting the settings described above, you also need to edit the properties of the shortcut you use to run Hipihi , on the Compatibility tab, so as to turn off the Advanced Text Services. This is shown below:

Hipihi Support
Email support is available from the Hipihi company at support@hipihi.com.
If you don't speak Chinese, you would do well to also post a description of the problem along with system specs and screenshots of any error messages, dialog boxes, etc. that would be useful in understanding the problem in the the company forum at http://forums.hipihi.com and the user operated IdeaShape forum at http://www.ideashape.cn
