Chinese University Web site hacked: You're pouring poo into our minds

This past week the Web site of one of China's top schools, Tsinghua University, was hacked. One of the news links on its front page was changed to read "Tsinghua President Gu Binglin--China university education is pouring sh*t into students’ minds."

Nike asks Chinese Government to investigate Internet rumor

After Liu Xiang pulled out of the 110m hurdles due to injury, one Chinese Netizen stated (en) that his sponsor Nike might have something to do with it. The writer, who claimed to be a Nike insider, posted his essay anonymously around August 18 (h/t John K.) and it's been plastered all over the Internet ever since:

Passport says she's 16, Google cache of deleted site says 14

The powers that be in China are finding out the hard way that it's impossible to delete something from the Internet. You may as well try to take pee out of a swimming pool. Amid accusations that gold medal-winning gymnast He Kexin is younger than the minimum age of 16, an article in China Daily, which lists her as 14, has mysteriously been deleted (old link).

Counting medals: Is this going to be an issue? It shouldn't

Wikipedia's page for Athens 2004's official medal count states that:

The ranking sorts by the number of gold medals earned by a country (in this context a country is an entity represented by a National Olympic Committee). The number of silver medals is taken into consideration next and then the number of bronze medals.


This is sooo not even an issue. Why then are many American Web sites refusing to give China, the current leader in gold medals, its due? Read more »

Clobber Chinese censorship with Freedom Sticks

In an effort to help journalists in Beijing surf the Web anonymously and unhindered by China's censorship, the Chaos Computer Club out of Germany has been distributing these little USB sticks with a Tor-enabled Web browser installed. They call 'em "Freedom Sticks". Here's an excerpt from their blog, explaining how they (and Tor) work:
