Olympic Internet: Paying more for less

Posted by RickM

Slashdot reports that Olympic Media Village is going to make journalists pay an amazingly high price in exchange for connecting to the Internet:

BOCOG (Beijing Organizing Committee of the 2008 Olympic Games) is charging a ridiculous amount of money for ADSL service: For 512/512, it
costs 7712.5 yuan (US$1,131.20); for 1M/512, it costs 9,156.25 yuan (US$1,342.95); for 2M/512, it costs a whopping 11,700 yuan (US$1,716.05).

Google does its part for Olympic visitors

Posted by RickM
Navigating China if you don't have the language down pat can be an Olympic size pain in the BOCOGs. Anyone hoping to use Google Maps is usually disappointed when searching for Chinese cities. A quick search on eBay for "anti-radiation maternity dress" gave 13 results, all of them China-based sellers.

A million 3G iPhones sold, a million Chinese iPhones cracked

Posted by RickM
The second coming of the Jesus phone topped 1 million in sales on Sunday, according to Apple Insider, and that's definitely an impressive number considering all the headaches that people are reporting with activation. Demand for the phone is such that people seem to be willing to endure both the lineups and the headaches. Say what you want, but that's impressive.

Equally impressive is another 1 million iPhone milestone that you may not have heard of. Analysts in China say that there are 1 million illegally cracked iPhones operating on China Mobile's network alone, not to mention iPhones which may be operating on other networks in the country.
