John Chow on making money online in China

Posted by RickM
The English language China Blog community does seem a little incestuous at times. So when I saw that fellow Canadian (and "Internet mogul") John Chow was in the Middle Kingdom, I was very curious to see his fresh thoughts.

China's greatest Internet potential

Posted by RickM
Or at least, as I see it.

I wrote before about Chinese crowd sourcing and how huge amounts of Nintendo game text could be translated in a matter of days by a few dedicated Chinese fans. I just found a quote on the China segment blog which, in a nutshell, sums up the idea of what I think to be China's greatest advantage:
"Any trivial matter multiplied by 1.3 billion will become a big problem; any astronomical figure divided by 1.3 billion will become a tiny number."
一个很小的问题,乘以13亿,都会变成一个大问题;一个很大的总量,除以13亿,都会变成一个小数目。

Prime Minister Wen Jiabao (温家宝)

"A little kindness multiplied by 1.3 billion will become an ocean of love;
A great problem divided by 1.3 billion will become a trivial matter."

一点很小的善心,乘以13亿,都会变成爱的海洋;一个很大的困难,除以13亿,都会变得微不足道。

Wen’s quote as altered by the Internet after the Sichuan earthquake. Source

Horrible news of a massive earthquake in Sichuan province today. For anyone who's searching for the very latest news coming out of the Chengdu area, Twitter is a good source of real-time updates.

Searching twitterlocal.net for people tweeting out of Chengdu gives the following stream of tweets (RSS). There are a few people you may want to follow: In English, inwalkedbud, lyrrael, trusip, and chengdoo.
