Podcast "Search Engine" and listeners help get CBC.ca unblocked

The Great Firewall is a phenomenon that many Internet users in China have been repeatedly beating their heads on for quite some time now. That was especially true for many of us Canadians living here when the CBC Web site was recently blocked.

I can't seem to access CNN right now. And on Twitter, there are a bunch of people reporting the same thing, though it seems intermittent.

(L) China and other nationalistic Net notions

Yesterday I opened my MSN messenger (technically my Adium client which I use for MSN IM) to find that the majority of my Chinese friends were all showing "(L)China" as a prefix before their names. Using the (L) will display a little heart on screen, thus showing love to China. While showing support for your country is all well and good, it does make me somewhat nervous that the peaks of Chinese Internet nationalism always seem to center around hatred/anger toward another countries.

Last time it was Japan.

This time, it's France.

My old friend Chris Amico is gearing up to cover the San Fransisco Torch Protests, and he's doing so with an impressive New Media arsenal. He's on Twitter and flickr but he's going to be relying heavily on Utterz this time, and dispatching audio clips from the event.
