YouTube's not blocked, see?

Posted by RickM
Well, it looks like YouTube has been unblocked. Sort of...

It seems far from fully functional just yet. Check this screencast I just whipped up to see what I mean:

I'm not sure if the timeout is because of keyword searches for Tibet or Lhasa or what the heck is going on. I'm done trying to figure out the censors.

But Pete Lin confirms that YouTube is essentially useless for him as well. And Marc Van der Chijs also reports having a short 2-minute ban imposed as well.

I have a sneaking suspicion it's so China can now defend against all the censorship accusations. "Block? What block? There's YouTube right there! Don't you see it?!! That means no block!"

Twitter has been giving me similar timeout problems over the past few days as well. Is anyone else having problems with Twitter? Whatever's going on, I hope China can be a little more transparent to the media. Its official denials are oftentimes so blatantly ridiculous that this is starting to remind me of an old Chinese idiom.

此地无银三百两 or "300 silver coins are not buried here".

An old Chinese man had 300 silver coins, and after burying them in his backyard, he wrote these words over top of them: 此地无银三百两, meaning 300 silver coins are not buried here.

The state media would do well to remember that one. Lie enough times, and people will just come to believe the opposite is true.

"No violence was used in the Tibet crackdowns."
"The situation is under control."

I'd really love to believe those statements are not lies.

I see you're still in China. We'll see what befalls my access when I get back to the continent from Japan tomorrow...

Yeah. Trip postponed until May, most likely. Hope you enjoyed your time over there!

Try this: go to "internet settings" on your computer.
"connections"->"lan settings" then put in a chinese proxy server. e.g. 60.12.15.242 this server is in "HangZhong"
save settings, try connect youtube, see if you can connect.

if the above server does not work. go to www.proxycn.com and find a chinese server. Proxy are mostly private, so you have to find a new one once every few days.

By 3rd April 2008, I see no problems.

For you video, are you sure it is not one of your wrong settings on your firewall, or browser that caused the problem? There are many ways to make a video like this even nothing is truly blocked.

Use strongvpn.com to unblock sites. I'm using it for 2 years and all sites which were blocked are accessible now. Those popular sites (which are in the top of blocking list) Google, MySpace, Wikipedia, bebo etc. It's really easy to surf them. This service requires some fee, but is better than all proxies with its bandwidth limitation.
