YouTube blocked in China, Tibet protests likely the cause

Posted by RickM
People all over China are Twittering that YouTube is blocked. I can't access the site here, either, and a quick ping through my network utility does show 100 percent packet loss, indicating that a block is likely in effect:

There were some videos uploaded to YouTube already about the demonstrations, but this block will definitely throw a wrench into anyone's plans to upload more. That said, Chinese versions of YouTube, which have been told to censor this kind of sensitive content, are all still up and running as I write this.

I was in China a few days ago and asked other tourists in my hostel if they knew whether You-Tube is accessible in China.

I was told that sometimes it can be accessed but off and on. The tourists were even wondering if it's because of slow internet speed at hostels.

Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, this block looks like it was just started about an hour ago. I expect it will last as long as the demos last.

It was still working yesterday afternoon but late in the evening it was off. Some blog posts said that it started at 10:45PM. Hopefully it will be back in a couple of days (?). For now proxy sites are the way to go (I am using www.proxy4china.com )

In China, the government controls the internet and everything else. When it can't control something, tanks roll and soldiers mow down the resistance. Just ask the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre survivors. I think some of them are out of jail by now. Read about it on wikipedia.

Joseph Goebbels, head of the Nazi Propaganda ministry, wrote the following in an article dated 18 March 1939, "As the Führer finished his proclamation to the German (sic) at 5 a.m. an historical decision had taken place. Shortly after, radio stations told the world that the historic provinces of Bohemia and Moravia had returned to the federation of the Greater German Reich. State President Hacha himself had asked the Führer to assume the protection of these provinces, noting that he 'was confidently placing the fate of the Czech people and nation in the hands of the Führer of the German Reich.' The so-called Czecho-Slovakia ceased to exist. In a single night a nation vanished that in reality had never been a nation."

Sound familiar? Maybe a little like Chinese government pronouncements that Tibet is and always has been part of China? Those representatives of other governments that hasten to reassure the Chinese government that they agree remind me of Neville Chamberlain, as well. "Peace in our time!" Unless, of course, you happen to be Czechoslovakian, or Tibetan. Doesn't the Chinese government say that Taiwan is also part of China? I wonder just how long "our time" is, anyway. I'm sure the Taiwanese must wonder.

Chinese government and Chinese people have interesting character. Also they have interesting internet society - developed internet censorship. I often travel to China and prevent such kind of blocking with strongvpn.com service. It's a VPN tunnel with which all sites being blocked before I can access. With it my connection is fast and stable. It works with mobile devices such as iPhone and the service is translated to China language, which is very good.

I think, world-secure-channel.com is better.
