Malaysia rolls out WiMAX-enabled notebooks

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia--Malaysia telco Packet One Networks was the first service provider in the country to launch consumer WiMAX services back in August 2008. However, users had to employ an external dongle to connect to the next-generation mobile broadband network. Today, Intel and Packet One Networks have announced the availability of laptops with integrated WiMAX radios.

Also known as 4G networks, WiMAX offers speeds of up to 40Mbps compared with 3G HSDPA which, in many implementations, tops off at 7.2Mbps. At today's launch, Netbooks and laptops with showcased with integrated WiMAX and bundled with a free 10Mbps plan (capped at 15GB per month) till September 2010 for the country.

These machines use Intel's latest Kilmer Peak WiMAX chips and is compatible with networks based on the 802.16e standard running on the 2.3GHz, 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz frequency bands. Intel plans to push the adoption of 4G networks to other Asian countries, though a specific timeline was not given.
