Avatar has been widely attributed for rekindling consumers' interest in 3D movies and coaxing introduction of 3D into the living rooms. Now the man behind the blockbuster, James Cameron, is causing a stir in the entertainment industry yet again. The US director is considering shooting Avatar sequences at high speed instead of the standard 24 frames-per-second (fps) film rate citing these benefits:

"When you author and project a movie at 48 or 60 [fps], it becomes a different movie. 3D shows you a window into reality; the higher frame rate takes the glass out of the window. In fact, it is just reality. It is really stunning."

For the record, 60fps is nothing new and has been supported by consumer-grade video cameras for quite some time, albeit only up to 1080i resolution. This frame rate usually displays smoother motion and less film judder compared with 24fps, though purists are quick to highlight its lack of film appeal. Still, we highly doubt this will trickle down to 3D Blu-ray movies watched at home anytime soon, which are mastered at 24fps
