Trust the Japanese to come up with cool tech to suit their lifestyles. Softbank has launched the One-Seg Wi-Fi TV tuner which doubles as a battery pack when plugged into the iPhone 3G's dock connector. How it is supposed to work is that the antenna on the tuner will tune to the TV signal and beam it via Wi-Fi to the handset. Users will be required to download and install a free application via iTunes, though.
The accessory has a noticeably smaller footprint of 50 x 85 x 16mm compared to the iPhone 3G which measures 62.1 x 115.5 x 12.3mm. It is expected to deliver about 3 hours of airtime and to take about 2 hours to juice up via an AC outlet (expect twice as long when using a USB port). Pricing details were not released at press time, but the tuner and battery pack is expected in Japan sometime mid-December.
