HTC launches Evo 3D in Asia

We've been expecting HTC to announce the availability of the phone since we learnt that this smartphone was being sold Down Under. Like LG's Optimus 3D, HTC's Evo 3D features an autostereoscopic screen, letting you watch 3D without the need for glasses.

Specs-wise, the handset is certainly impressive. The Evo 3D uses a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, sports a 4.3-inch qHD (960 x 540 pixels) display, dual 5-megapixel cameras for capturing 3D images or videos and runs on Gingerbread (Android 2.3). If you're thinking the specs seem very similar to LG's offering, then you are correct, but we note the higher-resolution screen of the Evo 3D should offer a better user experience.

While the Optimus 3D has a built-in software 3D upscaling feature, HTC's smartphone lacks this. It does however, come with Sense UI 3.0, which we loved in the HTC Sensation. The Taiwan-based company has also included three preloaded games (note that the LG Optimus 3D comes with 10) and will feature the HTC Watch service that gives the user access to a large catalog of movies.

Be warned that you will have to fork out some cash if you're keen on using this service to watch movies on the Evo 3D. It's similar to the iTunes rental system, where you get 24 or 48 hours to watch the movie as many times as you like. This has to be done within 30 days of paying for the rental. The HTC Watch service will be available in this region starting September.

The HTC Evo 3D will retail for S$895 (US$740) and is available in Singapore from end-August. The smartphone will be rolled out to the rest of Asia thereafter.
