HTC HD2 to get Windows Mobile 7?

Even though Windows Mobile (WM) 6.5 was launched only recently, there has been much talk about the next major release, WM7. Though Microsoft has not officially announced the next version, MSMobiles is reporting that the HTC HD2 will enjoy an official update come next year. That's a pretty bold statement to make, considering neither Microsoft nor HTC has anything to say about the matter.

But we can see why such a rumor has been conceived. The HD2 is the first WM device with a capacitive touchscreen that supports multitouch, a feature WM7 will need to implement to keep up with the competition. Furthermore, the HD2 comes with a fast processor and 448MB of RAM, more than any other smartphone currently on the market. It's easy to assume that HTC has over-specced the HD2 in preparation for something more demanding than WM6.5.

On the other hand, if one wants to put a damper on that theory, last year's Touch HD was more than capable of running the current version of WM, but HTC didn't provide an official update for that.

If you ask us, it's no point trying to factor in the WM7 upgradeability of the HD2 in a purchase decision. We've been using it for the last few days and, at this point, there's a lot we like about it even though it's "just" WM6.5 installed. Look out for our full review soon.

I have been carrying the HTC HD for the past year and i have no idea what "clustered" is talking about. From the amount of abuse i have done to my phone, i have to comment that HTC phones have been shockingly durable! Sure my HD looks like its gone through war. But everything works fine. I am sure that if there was a manufacturer's fault and you have never dropped the phone before, HTC will be happy to fix your phone for you. But if you did drop your phone and the scratches and dents can be seen, chances are not high that warranty is going to cover it. All phone manufacturers are the same. Moral of the story? Buy a protective case!!!

Beware of HTC's large screen phones. Any force applied to them, even taking off a screen protector, is enough to produce "newton rings" and the screen stops responding to touch. Not much use for a touch screen phone. HTC refuse to cover this by warranty and refuse to negotiate. expect to shell out up to $500 to repair it. With no guarantee that the next screen won't do the same thing. Design or Materials fault but they won't cover it by warranty.

This is one helluva highly spec-ed device. I think the fact that it runs so smoothly on WinMo 6.5 is good enough. WM7 is rumoured to be out in Q3 2010, right? By then, I assume there will be more brand new devices that will be built for this upgraded OS. many are drooling over the HD2 as it is already, I believe.
