What's my home theater's future Blu-ray compatibility?

Oct 11, 2008

Question on Home Entertainment:

The DVD player is integrated into the amp for the Panasonic SC-PT865W, right?

In the future, is there a possibility that I can buy a Blu-ray player & plug it into the home theater system, bypassing the integrated DVD player?

What I'm concerned most is the upgradability of the home theater system.

Well, sort of. You could route Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound from the Blu-ray player to the Panasonic via its digital optical audio input. However, the HDMI video output of the former will have to be directly connected to your display.

A much more flexible alternative is to invest in an A/V receiver such as the inexpensive Onkyo TX-SR606. Furthermore, the Onkyo can decode the latest hi-def Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD formats, too. The only problem is you'll need to allocate even more budget for a 5.1 speaker kit.

If I am not wrong SC-PT865W can only decode dolby digital via digital optical audio input.
