When most shutterbugs choose to add vintage effects to their images with smartphone apps, photographer Joel Pirela aimed to achieve the same result by building a homemade Lomography camera, the DigiLomo, which mimics the out-of-focus, light leaks and color aberrations found in Lomographic images.
The basis of this DIY project includes a homemade camera body, an old SLR lens and a working digital camera. First, he used a combination of black walnut wood and aluminum to build the camera housing. The bottom panel of the camera would have to be removable to facilitate the replacement of batteries and memory cards.

Next, a relatively cheap Vivitar digital camera was cannibalized and its electronic innards were transplanted into the camera body, making up the heart of the snapper. Later on, a manual Olympus SLR lens (or any SLR lens for the matter) was used as the eye of the shooter.
The creator also mentioned about how future iterations may have an external port for recharging its juice pack via a USB cable. Future versions may also be Eye-Fi compatible, allowing users to transfer images or video wirelessly.
From sample images, this homemade Lomography camera does produce images with that Lo-Fi look that's synonymous with those shot on film-based Lomographic cameras. However, this isn't a casual weekend project, and one will need specialized tools and know-how to complete this. If you're handy with tools, it may be worth a try for that one-of-a-kind digital camera.
