When we requested for the prototype unit of the Alpha SLT-A55, we also asked Sony to pair it with its new SAL24F20Z 24mm F2.0 Carl Zeiss lens. After all, this top-end optics is part of the company's new lens lineup.
The general construction of the glass feels extremely good. The hefty weight (577g with front and rear lens cap) is more than the A55 camera's, which is slightly lighter at 519g (with memory card and battery). Although the lens we got is a pre-production unit, we were impressed by the smooth and precise focusing it offered.
According to the specifications sheet, the A-mount glass has nine lens elements in seven groups. There are nine aperture blades, which form a nice circle to deliver some pleasant bokeh (how aesthetically pleasing the blur of the background or foreground is) to wow lens aficionados.
The Carl Zeiss lens has a large 72mm diameter with a minimum focusing range of 19cm. It also has an internal SSM (Super Sonic Motor) for quiet autofocus.
Check out more pictures of the lens below. Over at our hands-on with the A55 we have some sample photos taken with the dSLR and this 24mm lens (US$1,250). But do note that the pictures were taken with a prototype unit of the glass and camera, so the photos are not representative of the image quality from the commercial sets when these hit the stores.
