Dyson Air Multiplier blade-free fan blows into Singapore
If you thought fans were boring, you haven't seen Dyson's Air Multiplier yet. The airfoil-shaped ramp creates an area of low pressure by expelling the air forward, thereby pulling even more air from the back to the front.
Physics wow factor aside, the obvious advantage to this design is that you don't have to worry about kids sticking their fingers into the fan and cleaning is as simple as wiping the ring with a piece of cloth. We were duly impressed when we were given a short demo in our office. The stream of air was smooth, gentle and constant. The Air Multipler is actually pretty quiet at low speeds. But when you crank it up by tuning the knob at the base, the low drone gets noticeably louder. It's similar to what you'd hear when switching on an air-conditioner. Like conventional fans, you can tilt the Air Multiplier forward and backward, and also set it to oscillate.
The base of the Air Multiplier has a knob for you to adjust the speed of the fan.
The Air Multiplier comes in three sizes. The 25cm and 30cm Table version AM01, available now in Singapore, costs S$399 (US$320.58) and S$429 (US$344.69), respectively. The former is available in iron/blue shades while the larger fan comes in white/silver and silver/iron colors. The bigger Tower AM02 and Pedestal AM03 versions which will set you back S$699 (US$561.63) are expected to be available in mid-September, when the entire range will also be launched in Malaysia. That's a rather hefty price to pay for innovation considering an average fan costs only a couple of tens, but this Dyson could be one of the coolest additions to your living room.
It was a cooling day at CNET Asia with three Air Multipliers in our office.
The Tower and Pedestal models come with a simple, yet elegant wireless remote control.
The remote has a built-in magnet that lets it attach to the fan, so you don't have to worry about it slipping off.
Here's another shot of the remote for the Pedestal Air Multiplier.
