Help! My Pocket PC doesn't sync when I plug it in!

With Microsoft's ActiveSync software fully installed, you can see a circular icon in the tray at the bottom right of your desktop display. The status of your synchronization process is indicated by the appearance of this icon.

• Grey: No connection has been detected with the Pocket PC device.
• Green: If circle turns green and is swirling, this means the Pocket PC device is currently in the process of synchronization. Once the green circle stops moving, synchronization has been completed.
• Green with red exclamation mark: If a red exclamation mark (!) appears, then there are problems with the synchronization. Double click on it to bring up the ActiveSync control panel. Click on the Resolve Items link which will help you identify the issues and get on with the synchronization.

The other common problem is that ActiveSync does not detect the Pocket PC device plugged in. When this happens, removing the device and replacing it on the cradle after a few seconds helps.

Why can't I close my applications?

Unlike on your desktop, the "X" at the top right corner of a Pocket PC program does not close the application. Instead, it minimizes the program, leaving it in the memory.

Therefore, if you've opened a lot of applications without closing them properly, you may find your Pocket PC slowing down. When this happens, click "Control-Q" on the pop-up keyboard to close the current application. Or you could go into the "Memory" menu under "Settings" to manually close the applications.

You don't need to be unduly worried about leaving your applications running. When memory runs low, the operating system automatically shuts down the earlier programs.

Software such Gigabar also let users multitask more conveniently and close applications with ease.

How do I use my Office documents on my Pocket PC?

Pocket PC 2002 comes with scaled-down versions of Word and Excel that run .psw and .pxl files, respectively. It is very easy to convert such files into the common desktop formats of .doc and .xls.

Simply drag and drop the necessary files from your desktop into the Pocket PC device using Windows' File Explorer. Your Pocket PC has to be plugged in. The files are then automatically converted. Likewise, if you drag a .psw file from your PDA to your desktop, it is converted into the .doc format.

How do I install applications onto my Pocket PC?

Normally, an application you download off the Web will come with a self-installing executable, possibly contained within a Zip file. In such cases, run the file (usually setup.exe) and the application will be installed automatically. Your Pocket PC will have to be synchronized for this process to be completed properly.

If the application comes in a CAB format, copy this file into the handheld. Then run the file from within the Pocket PC device.
