Can the Samsung Ultra Touch be used as a modem?

Dec 5, 2009

Question on Mobile Phones:

I am trying to decide between the Samsung Omnia Lite and Ultra Touch. I need to have the option of using either as a modem for my computer. They both come with HSDPA but the Ultra Touch has a faster maximum speed at 7.2Mbps compared with the Lite's 3.6Mbps.

I heard that as long as a phone runs on Windows Mobile, like the Omnia Lite, it shouldn't be hard to use it as a modem. But will the Ultra Touch be able to do this as well?

You are right to say the Omnia Lite will have no problems acting as a modem for your notebook because it runs Windows Mobile. This can be achieved seamlessly whether you wish to connect using USB or Bluetooth to your computer, and even works on Mac OS X.

As for the Ultra Touch, I cannot be absolutely certain if it offers that feature. It uses Samsung's proprietary OS and therefore, even if connected to your notebook, you may still have to key in modem settings or install software for it to work.

Since using the phone as a modem is a key factor for you, I suggest going for the Omnia Lite. Don't worry too much about the 3.6Mbps HSDPA compared with the Ultra Touch's 7.2Mbps. 3.6Mbps is plenty fast and network quality from your operator is more important than this specification.
