Is Fujifilm's Super CCD EXR just hype?

Dec 4, 2009

Question on Digicams:

Is the Fujifilm FinePix F70EXR as good as they claim it to be? I'm particularly attracted to its Super CCD EXR feature as I've used a friend's Fujifilm with Super CCD previously and the picture quality is simply impressive.

But is it over-hyped considering today's advanced technologies and even non-traditional companies like Samsung & Sony making decent cameras? Also, is there a camera out there now that promises (and delivers) as much as the FinePix F70EXR and yet more fashionably built?

It is really up to individual's perception whether they feel Fujifilm's Super CCD EXR is overhyped. Personally, I find the sensor to deliver as promised, but comes with its own downsides. For this FinePix, image resolution will be reduced in certain EXR modes. But I have to say the low-light performance is pretty exceptional for a compact digicam.

That said, if you are looking for a stylish camera with similar functions to the F70EXR, you can consider the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX1. This sleek and slim camera employs the company's latest Exmor R CMOS sensor, which works in a similar fashion to the EXR sensor. Do take a look at our reviews of these two point-and-shoots and draw your own conclusion.
