Should I pick a Panasonic or Sony long-zoom?

Nov 17, 2009

Question on Digicams:

I'm buying a long-zoom camera but am undecided between two models. Should I pick the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 or Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H50?

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 has been replaced by the Lumix DMC-FZ35, so you may want to look for the newer model instead. Same goes for the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H50, which the HX1 succeeds. There are some differences between these two new models.

First, the resolution. The HX1 can capture only 9-megapixel images whereas the FZ35 snaps 12-megapixel pictures. So if you want to print larger photos, you'll have to look to the Lumix.

Secondly, the HX1 has an optical zoom range of 20x, which is a tad more than 18x on the Panasonic. So, the Cyber-shot allows you to zoom further.

Last but not least, the FZ35 is able to record RAW and JPEG format pictures while the HX1 can manage only JPEG. Hence, advanced users who want more control over post-processing of the pictures should consider the Lumix instead.

It really boils down to your needs for a camera and from there on decide again which is more suitable for you. Take a look at our reviews for these two models and hopefully they'll help you in your decision.
