Why can't I copy large files?

Nov 12, 2009

Question on PC & Peripherals:

I am unable to store large video files exceeding 4.3GB, especially those in MKV format, to my portable harddisk. Every time I try, my computer will prompt, saying it's unable to complete the task. Why is this so?

First, you need to check the available capacity on your drive. Go to My Computer and right-click on your external harddisk, then select Properties. If you have insufficient space, you will need to delete some files to store your video clip.

However, if the external storage shows sufficient capacity, then the issue could be the file system your drive is formatted in. In the old FAT32 system, files larger than 4GB cannot be stored. As such, you will have to reformat to NTFS to overcome this limitation.
