Should I pick an Ixus, Lumix or FinePix?

Oct 25, 2009

Question on Digicams:

I'm looking for a new digicam to replace my outdated Canon Powershot A95. Initially, I was planning to get the latest Ixus 200 IS but saw your review on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 and really liked the retro look. In between, I was also checking out the Fujifilm FinePix F200EXR as both won your Editor's Choice award.

The camera will be used mainly during our family vacation, to snap my two-year-old "run-away-from-the-camera" son, and some macro shots. As I don't like to use flash, so I need to know, among these three, which one can easily give me best shot in low-light conditions. HD recording is not important. I did at some point consider a Nikon or Canon dSLR, but after some testing, found them too bulky.

If you are looking for a point-and-shoot which excels in low-light image capture, I would suggest either the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 or the Fujifilm FinePix F200EXR.

The LX3 is widest at 24mm which is great if you want to take pictures of sceneries, and the F2.0 optics is really handy when taking shots at night. There is a new firmware upgrade available on Panasonic's Web site, and it improves the autofocus so I think that will be useful for capturing pictures of your active child.

The F200EXR employs Fujifilm's latest EXR sensor which, when taking photos in dimly lit environment, snaps three consecutive shots and combines them to deliver a well-exposed, sharp picture. The downside for using this technology is that the image resolution is at a reduced 6 megapixels. Also, the Fujifilm doesn't have exposure modes which are as comprehensive as the Lumix's.

Take a look at our sample pictures in the review and see which one suits you better.
