Can I listen to radio on my iPhone 3GS?

Oct 24, 2009

Question on Mobile Phones:

I was able to tune in to local radio channels on my previous Nokia phones. How do I tune in to local radio channels on my new iPhone 3GS? Is there anything I need to download to do so?

Your old Nokia mobile phone probably had an FM tuner built into it, which was why you were able to tune in to local radio stations. Unfortunately, the iPhone 3GS doesn't have the necessary hardware to do the same.

If you really want to listen to radio channels on your iPhone, there are iPhone applications that stream music. But these don't work the same way as an FM tuner--they require you to have an active data connection. In other words, use one of these apps only if you have an unlimited 3G data plan.

The iPhone 3GS has both an FM receiver and transmitter but this is not activated by default. The iPhone 3G has only an FM receiver. Grapevine is that Apple is working on an App to bring FM radio to the iPhone just like the latest generation iPod Nano.
